Gumi City in Gyeongbuk, which achieved excellent results in customized measures for sources of household and food waste generation and reduction performance, won the grand prize.
On the 6th, Gumi City was selected as the number one local government nationwide in this year's household and food waste management local government performance evaluation at the 14th Resource Circulation Day ceremony organized by the Ministry of Environment at Seoul Saehalyong Plaza, receiving the grand prize, the Presidential Citation.
Out of 226 basic local governments nationwide, seven local governments were selected after recommendations of excellent local governments by metropolitan units, followed by document screening and on-site evaluation.
The document screening was a quantitative evaluation based on the reduction performance of household and food waste generation, proper treatment, publicity achievements, and special policies. The on-site evaluation was conducted through field inspections by the Ministry of Environment evaluation team.
Gumi City received excellent scores through waste generation reduction performance, 99% distribution of RFID in apartment complexes, and customized measures by source.
Also, through on-site inspections of food waste treatment facilities, residential areas, and large food waste generating businesses, the evaluation team gave high scores.
In line with the food waste reduction policy, apartment complexes have distributed postpaid RFID individual measurement methods at 99%, and single-family houses are fully implementing the payment certificate method. In some one-room and single-family houses, prepaid RFID individual measurement methods are being piloted, resulting in a 1.2% reduction in food waste per household compared to the previous year.
Gumi City was evaluated for reducing cost burdens by bringing leftover food from local companies and small and medium-sized merchants suffering from COVID-19 to public treatment facilities operated by the city for processing.
Additionally, it was highly evaluated for generating 740 million KRW in non-tax revenue annually for Gumi City and establishing a foundation for coexistence with citizens.
