Seoul City Conducts Comprehensive Crackdown on Illegal Fire Safety Subcontracting at 729 Construction Sites
Joint Crackdown on 729 Construction Sites with Total Floor Area Over 2000㎡
Focused Inspection on Illegal Subcontracting and Unregistered Firefighting Construction Companies Violating Laws
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 19th that it will conduct a comprehensive crackdown on construction sites until the end of November to prevent large-scale fires in autumn.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters is promoting a comprehensive crackdown to proactively prevent large-scale fires at construction sites where there is a high risk of casualties in the event of a fire and to strengthen fire safety management through strict law enforcement.
The crackdown targets a total of 729 construction sites in Seoul with a total floor area of 2,000㎡ or more. For this operation, 28 teams consisting of 56 joint inspection personnel from the Fire and Disaster Headquarters and frontline fire stations will be deployed. They plan to focus on cracking down on illegal subcontracting during fire facility construction at each site.
In addition, inspections will be conducted on violations that may occur at construction sites, such as violations of the Fire Facilities Construction Business Act including construction by unregistered fire construction companies, legality of hazardous material storage and handling, and other fire facility safety management violations.
According to the Fire Facilities Construction Business Act, revised and enforced on September 10, 2020, building owners must subcontract fire facility construction separately from other types of construction. Violations of this regulation may result in a fine of up to 3 million won.
