Oh Se-hoon Attends Opening Ceremony of 'Seoul Citizen Sports Festival'... Resumes After 3 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 17th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will attend the opening ceremony of the '2022 Seoul Citizens Sports Festival' held at Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium, deliver the opening address, and encourage the athletes and citizens participating in the festival.
The Seoul Citizens Sports Festival is a community sports festival where all generations, from youth to seniors, gather in one place to enjoy together. It is jointly hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Sports Council to facilitate communication and harmony among the 25 autonomous districts. After being suspended due to the spread of COVID-19 since its last event in 2019, it is being held again after three years.
Since 2018, Seoul has integrated the 'Seoul Citizens Sports Competition' and the 'Seoul Senior Citizens Community Sports Competition' to develop the festival into a community sports event that all citizens, from youth to seniors, can enjoy together.
This year, over 8,000 community sports participants from the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul will attend the Seoul Citizens Sports Festival. The event will take place over two days, from the 17th to the 18th, across 11 venues including Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium, auxiliary stadiums, and futsal courts, with a total of 23 sports disciplines contested.
In addition to the competitions, various side events will be held to entertain citizens who participate mainly in recreational activities, including the ‘New Sports Experience Zone’ (unique sports easily accessible to all ages), the ‘Sports Bus’ (sports experiences using virtual reality (VR) devices), the ‘Arcade Game Zone’ (various mini-games such as hammer strength and mini basketball), the ‘Sports Trick Art Photo Zone’ (photo zones themed around the festival’s sports), and ‘Face Painting,’ providing a variety of attractions and entertainment.
Mayor Oh stated in his opening address that he will promote various community sports programs to enable all citizens to enjoy exercise easily and enjoyably in their daily lives and will work to create a safe sports environment. A ceremony celebrating the opening of the festival will also be held.
Furthermore, on the occasion of ‘Youth Day,’ Mayor Oh will receive the Grand Prize at the ‘5th Youth-Friendly Legislative Awards’ ceremony held on a special stage at the Peace Plaza in Olympic Park. This award recognizes the achievements of establishing and promoting the 2025 Seoul Youth Comprehensive Plan, the 'Youth Happiness Project.' The Youth-Friendly Legislative Awards are given to members of the National Assembly and local governments that have contributed to creating a social environment for youth, organized by Youth and Future.
