[Asia Economy Reporter Seohee Lee] Shin Ji-eun (30) has made a refreshing start.
On the 15th (local time), Shin Ji-eun shot 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the LPGA Tour AmazingCre Portland Classic (total prize money $1.5 million) held at Columbia Edgewater Country Club (par 72, 6,478 yards) in Portland, Oregon, USA. She tied for 7th place along with Brooke Henderson, Alena Sharp (both from Canada), and Tiffany Chan (Hong Kong). Ayako Uehara (Japan) leads with 7-under-par 65.
Shin Ji-eun recorded five birdies and one bogey. She reduced three strokes in the front nine with birdies on holes 2, 4, and 6, then added another birdie on the 12th hole (par 5) in the back nine. Although she made a bogey on the 14th hole, she secured a birdie on the final 18th hole (par 4), promising a strong next round. Her average driving distance of 256 yards and 26 putts during the round stood out. She is three strokes behind the leader and has a chance for her second career win since her first victory at the 2016 Texas Shootout.
Uehara swept up eight birdies (one bogey). Hannah Green (Australia) is in second place with 6-under-par 66, while 'Number 2' Nelly Korda (USA), Ayaka Furue, and Hinako Shibuno (both from Japan) are tied for third at 5-under-par 67. If Korda wins this tournament, she will rise to world No. 1. Since the current No. 1 and defending champion Ko Jin-young (27) will be out of competition until mid-October due to a wrist injury, this is Korda’s opportunity to reclaim the top spot for the first time in eight months since late January this year.
