‘Nighttime Modi!’ … Andong-si Namsun-myeon Dancing to Pungak Music
Working in the fields by day, drenched in sweat with music by night
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] The Pungmul group of Namsun-myeon, Andong City, gathered and played lively traditional music before the end of Chuseok on the 14th, ahead of the 49th Andong Folk Festival.
To inherit and preserve precious traditional culture and to create a vibrant and lively pungmul event, the Namsun-myeon Pungmul group, consisting of 23 members including Chairman Kim Jaegi, has been sweating it out with pungmul music every Wednesday and Sunday night at the Namsun-myeon Administrative Welfare Center since August 17.
Due to generational change caused by aging, the Namsun-myeon Pungmul group welcomed 8 new members this year. The new members were quite bewildered at first by the buk (drum) and janggu (hourglass-shaped drum) they held for the first time. Now, they say the pungmul practice relieves their stress and naturally makes them dance with joy, wearing big smiles.
Kim Jaegi, chairman of the Namsun-myeon Pungmul group, expressed his aspirations, saying, “I will lead well so that the new members can fully demonstrate their efforts and passion and achieve good results.”
