[Asia Economy Reporter Bang Je-il] The 14th typhoon 'Nanmadol' has formed, and the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted on the 14th that it could approach Jeju Island around the 19th.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the 26th tropical depression developed into typhoon 'Nanmadol' at 3 a.m. on the 14th, moving eastward at a speed of 13 km/h in the sea about 1300 km southeast of Okinawa. The central pressure was observed at 996 hPa, the radius of strong winds was 230 km, and the maximum wind speed was 18 m/s.
Nanmadol is expected to slowly approach the sea about 200 km north-northeast of Okinawa, Japan, until the 18th, and then move north to the sea about 280 km south-southeast of Seogwipo at 3 a.m. on the 19th.
At that time, the typhoon's central pressure is predicted to be 970 hPa, the radius of strong winds 350 km, the maximum wind speed 35 m/s, and the typhoon intensity is forecasted to be 'strong,' equivalent to the degree of a train derailment.
Regarding Nanmadol's expected path until the 19th, the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) have also made forecasts similar to that of the Korea Meteorological Administration.
On the other hand, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) expects that typhoon Nanmadol will not continue moving north but will stagnate near Okinawa, Japan, then change direction toward Taiwan after the 20th and make landfall in Taiwan around the 23rd to 24th.
The Korea Meteorological Administration added that it is too early to confirm Nanmadol's future path. The agency stated, "Since the typhoon has just formed and is highly variable, the path is expected to become clearer around the 16th." This means that since it has just developed into a typhoon, the path is highly uncertain.
