[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City, which is leading the promotion of bicycle culture and eco-friendly transportation, will make it easier and more convenient to purchase 'regenerated bicycles' at marts in the future.
On the 13th, Seoul City announced that it will open a pop-up store for regenerated bicycle sales at Lotte Mart (Songpa branch) on the 15th in collaboration with Lotte Mart and Light Brothers to revitalize the sales of regenerated bicycles. On the 2nd, the city signed a business agreement with the regenerated bicycle sales company Light Brothers and the logistics distribution company Lotte Mart to expand the sales of regenerated bicycles and promote carbon reduction transportation culture. Seoul City will promote and coordinate with related organizations for the operation of the regenerated bicycle pop-up store, Lotte Mart will provide store operation space, purchase regenerated bicycles themselves and deliver them to low-income groups, and Light Brothers will be responsible for creating and operating the regenerated bicycle pop-up store and selling regenerated bicycles.
In particular, this additional sales channel is expected to increase accessibility to purchasing regenerated bicycles and contribute to the spread of bicycle usage culture. Currently, regenerated bicycles are sold online (Light Brothers) and at offline stores in 10 autonomous districts.
Citizens who purchase regenerated bicycles will be provided with a free fitting (trial) service on-site to match the buyer's body type. Accordingly, Lotte Mart will give eco-friendly shopping bags to customers who purchase regenerated bicycles regardless of the purchase amount, and will also conduct a 'bicycle commuting campaign' for its employees.
Regenerated bicycles can be purchased at a lower price than regular used bicycles, and the proceeds from sales are paid to local self-support centers to be used as self-support funds for self-support workers. Seoul City plans to review the continuation of the pop-up store operation after three months in collaboration with Lotte Mart and Light Brothers.
Meanwhile, Seoul City is actively collecting 'abandoned bicycles' that are left on the streets or discarded, which harm the pleasant urban environment and aesthetics and cause inconvenience to citizens using bicycle racks. The annual collection volume is about 15,000 units, and bicycles that can be utilized are repaired in connection with local self-support centers in autonomous districts and reborn as 'regenerated bicycles.'
