View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] A study has revealed prospects that various types of cancer can be diagnosed early through a simple blood test.
On the 11th (local time), the British Guardian reported that researchers from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, USA, disclosed the clinical trial results with this content at the European Society for Medical Oncology conference held in Paris, France.
According to the report, the researchers conducted the Galleri blood test on 6,621 volunteers aged 50 and above. This method analyzes the blood of the test subject to detect unique genes (DNA) released from malignant tumors.
As a result, potential cancer responses were found in a total of 92 people. Additionally, further tests identified solid tumors or blood cancers in 35 of these individuals. This means that cancer was confirmed in 38% of volunteers who showed positive responses. In one clinical trial volunteer, breast cancer and uterine cancer were simultaneously discovered.
The researchers explained that most cancers were in the early stages, either stage 1 or 2. In particular, about three-quarters were types of cancer that are difficult to diagnose through regular screenings. The researchers emphasized, "The interesting point of these results is that many cases were cancers that could not be detected by standard tests."
However, while the researchers evaluated that this testing method is sufficient to glimpse the future of new cancer screening, they added that since there are still many technical improvements needed before applying it to the entire population, standard tests should continue to be taken.
