This year's memorial service, unlike last year due to the easing of COVID-19 social distancing measures, saw many citizens solemnly praying for the repose of the victims. The event proceeded in the order of scholarship awards to local elementary, middle, and high school students, presentation of plaques of appreciation, memorial speeches, greetings from bereaved family representatives, flower offerings, and memorial performances.
On September 12, 2003, Typhoon Maemi was a super typhoon that broke all previous typhoon records. The rising water level of Masan Bay and the resulting tsunami caused flooding in coastal lowlands, claiming 18 precious lives and causing severe damage.
