[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Lotte Mart announced on the 12th that it is introducing tofu produced in Jeju Island at 30 stores in the Seoul metropolitan area, including Zeta Plex and Junggye Branch, and selling Jeju eggs at all stores.
Lotte Mart Jeju Branch, which reopened with a renewal on August 11, sells tofu and eggs produced in Jeju Island in cooperation with local farms and small and medium-sized enterprises. Through local product operations, small and medium-sized enterprises can expand their distribution networks, and Lotte Mart Jeju Branch can quickly supply fresh products through self-procurement within Jeju Island, making it a win-win strategy. Locally focused products are also receiving enthusiastic responses from consumers. Tofu sales at the Jeju Branch have grown by more than 10% compared to the previous year during the month following the renewal opening.
Jeju tofu includes four items such as "Jeju Island Dried Tofu" and "Jeju Island Sea Water Tofu" produced by "Jeju Achim," an excellent tofu company in Jeju Island that has won the Jeju Economic Award and been designated as a HACCP facility. These can be found at 30 stores in the metropolitan area.
Jeju Island Dried Tofu is a local specialty made by undergoing a dehydration process 2 to 3 hours longer than regular tofu. It has a texture similar to mozzarella cheese and a richer aroma. It is widely used as a traditional holiday food in Jeju and is also popular among tourists visiting Jeju. Jeju Island Sea Water Tofu is a premium tofu made using seawater from the Jeju coast as brine and manufactured by traditional methods, maximizing the savory flavor of soybeans.
Jeju eggs are offered at all stores in two types from the "Aewol Appadeul" brand of Jeju Wellbeing Agricultural Cooperative: "Jeju Animal Welfare Certified Fertile Eggs" and "Jeju Dolharubang Doksegi."
Lotte Mart's Jeju-produced eggs come from Jeju chickens raised on Non-GMO (non-genetically modified organism) feed by Jeju Wellbeing Agricultural Cooperative, which is the first in Jeju Island to obtain animal welfare certification.
