Support for Processing Purchase Costs for Apple and Pear Farms Affected by Typhoon Damage... 10,000 KRW per 20kg Box
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 12th that it plans to support the cost of purchasing fallen fruit for processing by apple and pear farmers affected by Typhoon No. 11 until the 16th, to help stabilize farm management.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, as of 1 p.m. on the 8th, the reported area of crop damage caused by the typhoon is 15,602 hectares. The Ministry and the NongHyup conducted damage surveys on apple and pear farms affected by fallen fruit from the 6th to the 8th. Damage (fallen fruit 3,404 ha, lodging 3,301 ha, flooding 8,897 ha) occurred mainly in Jeju Island, Jeollanam-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Gyeongsangbuk-do, located along the typhoon’s path, and the damaged area is expected to fluctuate somewhat depending on future reports from local governments.
In the orchards where damage surveys were completed, local labor support personnel including farmers, local governments, NongHyup, and military units were deployed to quickly collect fallen fruit, and on the 11th, the fruit was delivered to nearby fruit processing factories and Agricultural Products Processing Centers (APC).
The Ministry plans to swiftly provide processing purchase cost support to affected farms by the 16th in cooperation with local governments, NongHyup, and processing companies. The government will provide a fixed amount of 2,000 KRW per 20 kg, local governments will provide 3,000 KRW per 20 kg, and processing companies will pay 5,000 KRW per 20 kg as raw material payment, so farmers will receive a total support amount of about 10,000 KRW per 20 kg. Local governments with secured local funds will provide matching support with government subsidies, while other local governments will secure additional supplementary budgets or use their own contingency funds for support.
In addition to support for processing purchase costs, farmers who have subscribed to crop disaster insurance can receive insurance payments based on the results of the disaster insurance damage survey. Once damage restoration is completed, the government and local governments plan to promptly pay restoration costs such as for damaged greenhouses and pesticide facilities through damage verification.
