Death Toll Rises to 88 in Sichuan Province Earthquake, China
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The death toll from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Sichuan Province, China, on the 5th (local time) has risen to 88.
According to Chinese media including the People's Daily on the 9th, the Sichuan Earthquake Disaster Joint Command announced that as of noon that day, the death toll from the earthquake was 88, with 30 missing. The number of injured was estimated at around 400, including 49 seriously injured.
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred at around 12:52 PM (local time) on the 5th in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
The earthquake and the subsequent landslides caused 249 buildings to collapse and damaged 13,500 houses. Seven hydroelectric power plants were also reported to have been damaged.

Authorities have dispatched about 10,000 rescue personnel to the site to carry out rescue operations.
