Incheon City to Establish Smart Traffic System on Major Arterial Roads by Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City will invest 13.6 billion KRW by 2024 to establish an intelligent smart traffic system on 55 major arterial roads covering 389 km.
The city announced on the 6th that it was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's '2023 Local Government Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Construction Project' and secured 5.4 billion KRW in national funding.
This project aims to provide real-time traffic signal information on major urban arterial roads to private navigation systems to assist safe driving, and to install smart CCTVs at major intersections to prevent traffic accidents and improve vehicle flow on congested roads.
In cooperation with the Korea Road Traffic Authority and private companies, the city plans to provide real-time traffic signal information such as upcoming traffic light colors, remaining time, and emergency vehicle dispatch information to drivers' navigation systems.
Once this service is commercialized, it is expected to reduce accident risks caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration by informing drivers of the safe speed to pass intersections according to signal timings.
The city will also install smart CCTVs at major arterial road intersections to collect traffic information, automatically detect traffic accidents and tailgating situations for prompt response to emergencies, and automatically detect traffic violations such as speeding or pedestrian protection violations during right turns, which will be used for traffic enforcement.
