Hyundai Glovis Develops World's Largest 'Liquefied Carbon Dioxide Carrier' with International Certification
Hyundai Heavy Industries Group Jointly Develops Ultra-Large LCO2 Carrier
Certification Obtained from ABS and Marshall Islands Flag Administration
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Glovis has taken the first step toward developing the world's largest liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carrier in collaboration with a leading domestic shipbuilder.
On the 6th, Hyundai Glovis announced that it had obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Marshall Islands flag state for a 74,000㎥ liquefied carbon dioxide carrier jointly developed with Hyundai Heavy Industries Group.
Approval in Principle certification is a process in which an official organization recognizes the suitability, safety, and effectiveness of technology at the early stage of ship development. It signifies that the foundational phase required for shipbuilding has been approved, and the technology standards will be applied in the subsequent design process. ABS and the Marshall Islands flag state are regarded as international standards in ship technology approval.
At the AIP certification ceremony held on the 5th (local time) in Milan, Italy, representatives from five companies, including Hyundai Glovis, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, ABS, and the Marshall Islands flag state, attended to celebrate the acquisition of the basic certification for the 74,000㎥ liquefied carbon dioxide carrier.
As the shipowner, Hyundai Glovis provided information related to the maritime transportation and ship operation of liquefied carbon dioxide, including necessary specifications. Specifically, considering the port call restrictions of candidate ports where carbon dioxide can be loaded or unloaded, they calculated ship specifications and maximum loading capacity suitable for multiple ports and ensured these were reflected in the ship design.
By participating in this development, Hyundai Glovis acquired detailed information on the characteristics of ultra-large liquefied carbon dioxide carriers, requirements for loading and unloading liquefied carbon dioxide, and precautions during transportation. Given that no shipping company worldwide has experience in transporting liquefied carbon dioxide, Hyundai Glovis is evaluated to have secured a favorable position to dominate the market.
Hyundai Glovis plans to lead the market with the ultra-large liquefied carbon dioxide carrier developed this time. Furthermore, by participating as a shipowner in the joint development of liquefied carbon dioxide carriers and directly verifying economic feasibility and safety, the company aims to secure competitiveness in various areas of future eco-friendly maritime transportation.
