Domestic Complete Vehicle Industry to Export Over 300,000 Eco-Friendly Cars This Year
Both Export Volume and Export Value Increase Significantly
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] It has been revealed that the export volume and export value of eco-friendly vehicles (hybrid, electric, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen electric vehicles) from the five domestic automakers have significantly increased this year.
According to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA) on the 29th, the total export volume of eco-friendly vehicles from the five automakers from January to July this year was 305,909 units. This is a 41.1% increase compared to the same period last year (216,771 units).
The export volume of eco-friendly vehicles in July was 54,164 units, up 59.9% from 33,874 units in the same month last year. This is the first time monthly exports of eco-friendly vehicles have exceeded 50,000 units.
The Automobile Industry Association explained that the overall increase in export volume was due to the rollover of shipments delayed last month caused by the transport refusal of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Cargo Solidarity and increased production volume.
Looking at the export volume of eco-friendly vehicles by company from January to July, Hyundai Motor and Kia recorded 139,912 units and 131,837 units respectively, an increase of 21.7% and 49.3% compared to the same period last year.
Renault Korea exported 36,153 units, an increase of 165.8%, and Ssangyong Motor exported 129 units. Ssangyong had no eco-friendly vehicle exports during the same period last year. However, Korea GM had no eco-friendly vehicle exports in the first seven months of this year.
Along with the increase in export volume, export value also reached a record high. The export value of eco-friendly vehicles from January to July this year was $8.76 billion, the largest ever for the same period.
Last month, the export value of eco-friendly vehicles by fuel type was $730 million for electric and hydrogen vehicles, $670 million for hybrids, and $80 million for plug-in hybrids, representing increases of 68.4%, 60.9%, and 40.0% respectively compared to the same month last year.
By fuel type, electric vehicles exported 116,600 units, a 56.5% increase from 74,518 units in the same period last year. Hybrids increased by 33.8% to 160,421 units, and plug-in hybrids increased by 33.3% to 28,714 units. However, hydrogen electric vehicle exports were limited to 174 units, a 78.7% decrease.
By model, in electric vehicles, Kia EV6 led with 35,344 units, followed by Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 30,545 units, and Kia Niro EV with 13,973 units.

For hybrids, Renault XM3 HEV exported 35,910 units, Hyundai Kona HEV 19,645 units, and Kia Niro (SG2) HEV 16,176 units. For plug-in hybrids, Kia Niro PHEV exported 6,204 units, and Kia Sorento PHEV 6,192 units. The only hydrogen electric vehicle exported was Hyundai Nexo with 174 units.
