Byeongno Lee, Damyang County Governor, States Position Regarding Investigation on Violation of Public Official Election Act
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Lee Byeong-no, the mayor of Damyang County, Jeonnam, expressed his position on the investigation for violation of the Public Official Election Act through a statement on the 25th.
Mayor Lee said, "Regardless of the circumstances, I am sorry to the residents for being investigated for violating the Public Official Election Act," and added, "I will fully clarify the charges through the investigation and trial process by the investigative authorities."
He continued, "I will strive to keep the promises made to the residents at the beginning of the hot summer," and stated, "I will do my best to ensure that there is no disruption to the 8th term of the civilian government."
Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Crime Investigation Unit of the Gwangju Police Agency has been investigating Mayor Lee Byeong-no of Damyang County on charges of providing meals and offering condolence money to voters during the June 1st nationwide simultaneous local elections.
In particular, suspicions have been added that he appointed lawyers to represent eight residents who received food and were questioned as witnesses by the police, and even paid their legal fees. On the 19th, the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office applied for a pre-arrest warrant against Mayor Lee Byeong-no and one election campaign worker for violating the Public Official Election Act regarding prohibited donation activities.
