Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport: "GTX to Proceed Without Delay... Line A Opening in 2024, Line B in 2030"
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport emphasized the smooth commencement and opening of the GTX (Greater Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Railway) project in response to concerns that the project might be delayed beyond the government's expectations.
On the 24th, the Ministry stated, "We are steadily advancing the commencement and opening of GTX to alleviate traffic congestion during commuting hours in the metropolitan area," adding, "The GTX-A line currently under construction plans to open sequentially starting with the Suseo~Dongtan section from the first half of 2024."
The section from Paju Unjeong to Seoul Station on Line A experienced initial delays in starting construction due to compensation and permits. However, the Ministry said, "We are thoroughly managing the schedule to ensure opening within 2024." They also explained, "We are making every effort to maintain safety management at all sites to prevent accidents during the deep underground tunnel construction."
Samsung Station, being constructed in connection with the Yeongdong-daero complex development project, is scheduled for full opening in 2028, but to minimize inconvenience for GTX users, non-stop passage is being promoted from November 2025.
The GTX-B line is currently undergoing the selection process for operators in both the publicly funded and privately funded sections, with plans to commence construction in the first half of 2024 and open in 2030.
On the 23rd, the first bidding for the publicly funded section (Yongsan~Sangbong) resulted in three out of four lots failing due to single bids, raising concerns that the schedule might be delayed beyond the government's expectations.
The Ministry stated, "We plan to promptly proceed with follow-up procedures such as re-announcements to ensure there are no setbacks in commencing construction in the first half of 2024 and opening in 2030."
