View original image[Asia Economy Culture Young Intern Reporter] The wife of the spokesperson for the Kremlin in Russia has sparked controversy after it was revealed that she enjoyed a wild party in Greece amid the hardships faced by Russian citizens due to various Western sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine.
According to foreign media including CNN on the 22nd (local time), Tatiana Navka (47), the wife of Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, recently posted a video on Instagram showing her breaking plates at a Greek restaurant. In the video, Navka danced to the music while breaking plates. Along with the video, she wrote, "Plate breaking is part of the Greek-style wild night." The post has since been deleted.
Navka is a 2006 Torino Winter Olympics ice dancing gold medalist and, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, she and her husband have been placed on the European Union (EU) sanctions list. Being on the sanctions list results in asset freezes and entry bans within the EU.
Greece, an EU country, denied Navka's entry. This has led to speculation that Navka entered a Greek island via T?rkiye (Turkey), one of the countries that does not sanction Russia. A Greek media outlet reported that Navka, who was born in Ukraine, traveled between Turkey and Greece on a yacht owned by an anonymous Russian businessman.
The post has drawn criticism for revealing inappropriate behavior by a high-ranking Russian official amid an ongoing war. From the EU's perspective, this incident exposed loopholes in the sanctions against Russia.
CNN reported that this controversy has also sparked reactions within Russia. Currently, Greece is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and has been providing military support such as weapons to Ukraine, placing it on Russia's 'enemy' list.
