Frequent Rain Before Fishing Ban Lift (August 20) Activates Fishing Grounds "Bountiful Flower Crab Harvest Expected This Year"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart is planning the largest quantity of flower crabs in a single week event and launching a shock price promotion.
Emart announced on the 24th that from the 25th to the 31st, it will sell "autumn fresh flower crabs" at 888 KRW per 100g with up to 40% discount when accumulating Shinsegae points and using event cards. This event is part of a seafood consumption promotion campaign conducted with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. When accumulating Shinsegae points, a 20% discount is applied, and an additional 20% discount is given when using event cards, allowing for a maximum 40% discount.
Emart is selling fresh flower crabs at the lowest price in 7 years. This is the lowest level since it was sold in the mid-800 KRW range in 2015.
For this event, Emart planned a quantity of over 100 tons of flower crabs. More than 500,000 crabs will be stocked only at Emart. Emart emphasized that the reason they can sell a large quantity of flower crabs at a low price is because they formed a direct transaction network with about 50 fishing vessels. This allowed them to plan the maximum quantity while significantly lowering the price.
The increasing catch volume of flower crabs also played a role. Although the catch volume of flower crabs decreased after 2010, it began to slightly rebound in 2019 and has been increasing significantly since 2020. The annual catch volume of flower crabs, which was 30,000 tons in 2013, decreased to 11,770 tons, about one-third, in five years. However, starting with a slight increase in 2019, it recovered to the 2015 level in 2021.
This spring's flower crab catch recorded the highest volume since 2014. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Fisheries Information Portal, the spring flower crab catch from April to June was 6,931 tons, the highest figure since 2014.
The autumn flower crab season, which is just beginning, is also expected to have a bountiful catch. Since the catch volumes of spring and autumn flower crabs usually show similar trends, expectations are high. This year, frequent rain in early August, the most important period for flower crab habitat formation and growth, is expected to help the flower crab catch. In early August, just before the fishing ban lift on August 20, the number of rainy days in the main flower crab production area, Chungnam region, was 14 days, more than last year's 4 days.

Rain after the fishing ban lift hinders flower crab fishing and reduces the total catch volume. However, rain before the fishing ban lift increases freshwater and plankton flowing from land to sea, activating the coastal fishing ground ecosystem.
