Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam opened Gwangam Beach on July 2nd and operated it for 51 days before closing it on the 21st. This year, no safety accidents occurred during the opening period of Gwangam Beach, and about 73,000 visitors enjoyed swimming, marking the highest number since its reopening in 2018.
This year, based on COVID-19 guidelines, convenience in using facilities without wearing masks outdoors, various marine sports events held at the beach such as the SUP competition and Jeonmaseon competition, attracting tourists and promotion, installation of reed parasols, dredging of the sea area, facility improvements, and environmental maintenance such as removal of pebbles and cleaning of the white sand beach contributed to an increase of about 10,000 visitors, or 15%, compared to the previous year, showing a trend of increasing visitors annually.
To ensure pleasant operation of the beach, the city continuously disinfected indoor facilities such as restrooms and hired professional lifeguards for swimmer safety so that visitors could enjoy swimming with peace of mind. As a result, there were no water safety accidents this year.
Additionally, during this beach opening operation, survival experience swimming was held every weekend under the supervision of the Changwon Coast Guard to prevent water safety accidents. The city perfectly responded to water safety accidents through close cooperation with related organizations such as Masan Jungbu Police Station, Masan Fire Station, and Masan Health Center.
