[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Former People Power Party lawmaker Kim Eun-hye (51) was appointed as the new Chief of Public Relations at the Presidential Office on the 21st.
Chief Kim is a media expert who worked as a broadcast journalist and a first-term lawmaker before running for governor of Gyeonggi Province. She entered politics after serving as the second spokesperson at the Blue House during the Lee Myung-bak administration from 2008 to 2010, and has now returned as the top figure in the Presidential Office’s public relations line after 12 years. She returned to politics just over two months after narrowly losing by 0.15 percentage points to Gyeonggi Governor candidate Kim Dong-yeon of the Democratic Party in the June 1 local elections.
Former lawmaker Kim, a former MBC reporter and anchor, entered the 21st National Assembly in 2020 and served as the People Power Party spokesperson and the head of the public relations team for then-presidential candidate Yoon Seok-youl’s campaign headquarters. She also led media relations as the spokesperson for President-elect Yoon immediately after his election.
Kim, whose constituency was Bundang-gap in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, home to the Daejang-dong development project, stepped down as spokesperson for the President-elect in April and entered the People Power Party’s gubernatorial primary in Gyeonggi Province. She defeated former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min to become the party’s candidate and subsequently resigned her parliamentary seat. Although she aimed to become the first female metropolitan governor, she was narrowly defeated by candidate Kim and temporarily paused her political career.
Afterward, Kim went to Germany for further studies but has now returned as the ‘control tower’ of public relations at the Presidential Office. She also served as the second spokesperson at the Blue House during the Lee Myung-bak administration. Her career includes special director and anchor at MBN and director of communications at KT. Ahead of the 2020 general election, she was also the spokesperson for the Innovation Integration Promotion Committee during the conservative unification process. Last year, she ran for party leader at the People Power Party’s national convention.
Kim Dae-gi, Chief of Staff to the President, explained the reason for her appointment at a briefing, saying, “She is a person with the best expertise in public relations and media. Having served as the head of the campaign public relations team and spokesperson for the President-elect, she has a deep understanding of the President’s governance philosophy. She is the right person to properly convey information and communicate in the operation of the Yoon Seok-youl administration’s governance philosophy and national agenda.”
Chief Kim said, “I will work hard to serve as a bridge that conveys the expectations and wishes of the people sincerely and accurately, and to properly communicate President Yoon’s governance philosophy with a humble attitude. Please feel free to criticize me whenever I fall short.”
