Hanam-si Food Bank Selected as 'Excellent Food Bank & Market' of the Year
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Hanam City Food Bank in Gyeonggi Province has been selected as the 'Food Bank and Market of the Year.'
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 19th that it conducted evaluations from the 15th to the 29th of last month on 11 food bank and market sites that applied from cities and counties within the province, selecting Hanam City Food Bank as this year's Food Bank and Market of the Year.
Hanam City Food Bank demonstrated excellent overall operational performance, including donation item provision amounts and achievements in discovering users and donors. In particular, it received high praise for implementing creative and distinctive projects such as COVID-19 relief item support, companion plant sharing emotional support projects, and health guardian projects.
The province will provide Hanam City Food Bank with incentives worth approximately 50 million KRW, including personnel expenses for one additional staff member and facility remodeling support.
Kwon Moon-joo, Director of the Welfare Business Division of the province, stated, "The Food Bank and Market of the Year project is part of 'Gyeonggi Chance,' prepared to offer 'more opportunities' and 'better opportunities' to hardworking and well-performing sites," adding, "We hope this project will serve as a signal to revitalize donation food and other provision projects."
Food banks and markets are private initiatives that receive donations of food and daily necessities from companies or individuals and distribute them free of charge to neighbors in need and vulnerable social welfare facilities.
In Gyeonggi Province, some institutions began to establish spontaneously in 1998, and currently, 86 locations are in operation.

As of last year, 85 food banks and markets in the province provided goods worth approximately 62.9 billion KRW to 52,108 vulnerable individuals and 1,857 organizations.
