KHNP will have a president from outside the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for the first time in about 10 years.
According to a comprehensive report from Asia Economy on the 18th, the Ministry of Economy and Finance held a Public Institution Management Committee meeting in the morning and selected Professor Hwang as the new president of KHNP. KHNP plans to hold a shareholders' meeting on the morning of the 19th to approve the appointment of Professor Hwang as president. A government official stated, "After deliberation and resolution by the Public Institution Management Committee, Professor Hwang was notified as the candidate for KHNP president."
Professor Hwang is regarded as the top expert on spent nuclear fuel in Korea. After graduating from Seoul National University's Department of Nuclear Engineering in 1982, he went to the United States to study and earned his master's and doctoral degrees in nuclear engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also served as the chairman of the 'Spent Nuclear Fuel Public Deliberation Task Force (TF)' within the Conflict Management Committee of the National Energy Committee. He is evaluated to have contributed to the development of the domestic nuclear power industry by participating in various advisory committees across both public and private sectors.
He also has ties with KHNP. Since 2019, Professor Hwang has served as co-chairman of the KHNP Innovation Growth Committee alongside President Jung Jae-hoon. Last year, he also chaired the KHNP Nuclear Safety Advisory Committee.
It is reported that KHNP is currently undergoing internal procedures to hold a president inauguration and retirement ceremony within this month. This means that the KHNP president could be replaced as early as this month. The appointment of Professor Hwang as president will go through the process of approval by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy after the KHNP shareholders' meeting resolution, followed by the president's final approval.
