[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 14th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Center for the Promotion of Communication for the Disabled announced that they have developed and are distributing for free a chat-based communication application called ‘CommuniTalk’ to assist disabled individuals who face communication difficulties amid the ongoing non-face-to-face daily life following the spread of COVID-19.
‘CommuniTalk’ is designed to help people with developmental and brain lesion disabilities, who find it difficult to input text, easily communicate with family, caregivers, and community members using only pictures, thereby supporting the social participation of disabled individuals.
‘CommuniTalk’ includes over 10,000 Korean Augmentative and Alternative Communication (KAAC) and Communi symbols, all of which can be freely individualized and used. In addition to the chat function, it can also be used as an AAC tool, providing assistance in terms of portability difficulties associated with existing assistive devices.
‘CommuniTalk’ can be freely customized and used on the AAC usage screen of an Android smartphone carried by the disabled individual according to their specific disability characteristics. Even those who have difficulty with precise selection can easily choose symbols using the scanning function when using the AAC tool.
