Kim Jeong-hyun, Chairman of the People Power Party Gwangju Branch, Draws Attention with Volunteer Work Instead of Inauguration Ceremony
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kim Jeonghyun, Chairman of the People Power Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Party Committee, attracted attention by replacing his inauguration ceremony with volunteer work.
According to the People Power Party Gwangju City Party on the 10th, Chairman Kim carried out environmental cleanup activities by picking up discarded trash at Jangnok Wetland of Hwangryonggang, a river wetland in the urban area of Gwangsan-gu, that morning.
The event, conducted under the guidance of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office of the Ministry of Environment, was attended by about 80 party members who collected trash discarded along the 1.6 km section from the entrance of Jangnok Bridge to Songjeong 1 Bridge, including the river and walking paths.
Chairman Kim said, “The Hwangryonggang Jangnok Wetland is a huge water purifier that filters pollutants, serves as a flood and drought control area, and its role is gradually increasing by regulating urban humidity and temperature.” He added, “To protect the city’s first wetland protection area in Gwangju, I conducted natural cleanup volunteer activities instead of an inauguration ceremony.”
He continued, “I believe the position of city party chairman is a position for service,” and stated, “For regional development, the People Power Party Gwangju City Party will take the lead by cooperating well with the central government to secure necessary budgets and national funds for Gwangju City.”

Meanwhile, the Hwangryonggang Jangnok Wetland in Gwangsan-gu was designated as a national wetland protection area in December 2020. It is the only national wetland located in an urban area in Korea, home to 829 species of diverse wildlife including endangered species such as otters, leopard cats, black-crowned night herons, and white-naped cranes.
