A man in his 30s sentenced to 15 years in prison in the first trial for serial arson at Yeongdeungpo shops
Court: "Cannot Show Leniency to Indiscriminate Crimes"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 30s who was prosecuted for serial arson resulting in one death due to dissatisfaction with society was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the court.
The Criminal Division 14 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Dong-hyun) sentenced Mr. A, who was charged with arson causing death of an inhabited building and other charges, on the 10th, stating, "A heavy sentence is inevitable."
The court explained, "We understand that the defendant lost his parents at a young age and grew up with difficulty," but added, "If one only blames their difficult environment and commits indiscriminate crimes against society, society can no longer show leniency."
It continued, "We acknowledge that he is now deeply remorseful, but due to the severity of the act, a heavy sentence is unavoidable," and stated the reason for sentencing: "We hope he makes a fresh start in life after serving this sentence."
Earlier, the prosecution requested a 25-year prison sentence, arguing that a heavy sentence was necessary considering the damage caused by Mr. A's crime.
In his final statement, Mr. A said, "A terrible incident occurred where a precious life was senselessly lost due to my foolish actions. I sincerely apologize to the bereaved families and victims," and added, "I will live my life in repentance."
Previously, Mr. A was accused of setting fire to two buildings consecutively in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, in April. The fire resulted in the death of a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s was hospitalized after inhaling smoke. During the firefighting process, one firefighter was also slightly injured.
