Stealing Again Just a Month After Release... Prosecution Seeks Prison Sentence for 'Daedo' Josehyung Cho
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution has requested a prison sentence for Jo Se-hyung (84), who was indicted for theft just one month after his release.
On the 10th, at the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 11 (Chief Prosecutor Shin Jin-woo), during the trial for Jo's theft charges under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, the prosecution asked the court to sentence Jo to three years in prison. For A, who committed the crime together with Jo, the prosecution requested a four-year prison sentence.
The prosecution pointed out, "Jo has a prior record of similar crimes and committed them habitually." In his final statement, Jo said, "I am ashamed to stand before the court for theft crimes at this age," adding, "I committed the crime with the intention of helping a junior, but if leniency is granted, I will not commit shameful acts in the future."
Jo was arrested and indicted on charges of secretly entering a luxury country house located in Cheoin-gu, Yongin City, with accomplice A, a prison mate, in January and stealing valuables worth about 27 million won. Jo, who was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for theft in 2019 and released in December last year, was found to have stolen someone else's property again just one month after his release.

Jo earned the nickname "Daedo" (Great Thief) for his unprecedented theft spree targeting high-ranking members of society in the 1970s and 1980s. He was sometimes glorified as a "Robin Hood" figure, as it was known that he followed certain principles, such as using part of the stolen money to help the poor. After being arrested in 1982 and serving 15 years in prison, he seemed to start a new life through missionary work after his release, but he fell back into crime starting with being caught burglarizing an empty house in Tokyo, Japan, in 2001.
