Yeosu Geomundo Selected as Target Site for Modern Historical and Cultural Space
Preservation of Cultural Heritage Related to the Influx of Modern Civilization
Modern House Streets Created Centered on Naehang
Yeosu Geomundo Island has been selected as a target site for this year's Modern Historical and Cultural Space Revitalization Project. On the 9th, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it received higher scores than eight other local governments in a comprehensive evaluation that checked factors such as concentration, authenticity, historicity, and sense of place.
Geomundo is a fishing village where diverse history and cultural heritage coexist. It preserves cultural heritage related to the introduction of modern civilization, such as the Geomundo Incident, and a modern residential street has been established centered around the inner harbor. The post-liberation appearance of the local government can also be seen in buildings such as the Samsan-myeon Uisadang building.

After further review and deliberation by the Cultural Heritage Committee, if registered as a nationally registered cultural heritage modern historical and cultural space, efforts can be made to preserve heritage and revitalize the old downtown area. Currently, eight places are registered as modern historical and cultural spaces: Mokpo, Gunsan, Yeongju, Iksan, Yeongdeok, Tongyeong, Seocheon, and Changwon. The Cultural Heritage Administration stated, "We will work with Yeosu City and property owners to create a specialized attraction where the past and present, cultural heritage and the region coexist."
