US Provides Additional Weapons Support Worth 1.3 Trillion Won to Ukraine
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The U.S. government is reportedly planning to provide an additional $1 billion (approximately 1.3 trillion KRW) worth of weapons to Ukraine, which is at war with Russia.
According to major foreign media on the 5th (local time), the support package includes High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), advanced surface-to-air missile systems (NASAMS) ammunition, and about 50 M113 armored vehicles.
However, President Joe Biden has not yet signed off on the support plan, and the types and quantities of weapons may change, foreign media reported.
The weapon support is expected to use the "Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA)" budget, which does not require congressional approval.
The announcement of the specific scale and details of the support is expected early next week.
On the 1st, the U.S. also announced it would provide $550 million (approximately 714.2 billion KRW) worth of weapons, including HIMARS and 155mm artillery shells.
Earlier in June, it announced it would deliver $1 billion worth of weapons to Ukraine, including 18 155mm howitzers, 36,000 artillery shells, and HIMARS ammunition.
The 16 HIMARS units provided to Ukraine are evaluated as playing a key role in halting the Russian army's advance in the eastern Donbas region.
