View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Amid the ongoing resurgence of COVID-19, the spread of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 (nicknamed 'Centaurus') continues.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 5th, two additional cases of infection with the BA.2.75 variant, known to have stronger immune evasion and transmissibility than the dominant BA.5 variant, were confirmed.
The two patients confirmed on this day are family members in their 30s and 20s residing in Incheon. Both had completed their third vaccine dose but tested positive on the 31st, one day after arriving from Mexico on the 30th of last month. They are currently exhibiting mild symptoms and are receiving home treatment. The health authorities are conducting epidemiological investigations on their contacts.

As a result, the total number of BA.2.75 infection cases in South Korea has reached 16. Of these, 13 cases were imported from overseas, and 3 cases, with no overseas travel history, are classified as community transmissions. Among the 16 imported cases, 8 arrived from India, 2 from Vietnam, 2 from Mexico, and 1 from Nepal.
