SK Hynix to Mass-Produce Next-Generation DDR5 DRAM CXL Memory Starting Next Year
'Next-Generation DRAM' CXL Sample First Developed in Industry
SK "Physical Reveal Scheduled for August-October"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] SK Hynix announced on the 1st that it has developed the first DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5) DRAM-based CXL memory sample. This is the first time a solution sample that significantly enhances server scalability has been created. Full-scale mass production is planned to begin next year.
The CXL memory developed by SK Hynix is a 96GB product using the latest technology node 1anm DDR5 24Gb. The form factor is at the EDSFF E3.S level. When this product is installed, memory semiconductor bandwidth and capacity can be increased economically.
Kang Wookseong, Vice President of DRAM Product Planning at SK Hynix, said, "The development of CXL technology is a new opportunity to expand memory and create new markets," adding, "We plan to mass-produce CXL memory products starting next year." He continued, "Even after mass production, we will develop cutting-edge DRAM and packaging technologies to launch various bandwidth and capacity expansion memory solution products based on CXL."
CXL is a standardized interface created to improve the efficiency of CPUs, GPUs, accelerators, and memory. Its utility can be maximized especially when equipped with a PCIe interface capable of transmitting more than 8 gigabytes (GB) of data per second. It functions to increase product speed and expand capacity.
For this reason, SK explains that the core of the CXL memory market is 'securing scalability.' In the existing server market, when adopting a new server platform, memory, capacity, and performance were fixed, but using this CXL product can compensate for these limitations. Since it is an interface useful for high-performance computing systems such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, it is evaluated to have high growth potential.
