[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] Las Vegas, USA, which had been suffering from severe drought, experienced flooding due to sudden heavy rain.
On the 31st (local time), NBC News reported, citing the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), that over 25mm of rain fell in just about an hour on the 28th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is an unusual weather phenomenon for Las Vegas, a city located in the middle of the desert. The city is also known for receiving almost no rain throughout the year and had been suffering from severe water shortages until just a few days ago. NBC explained that due to the desert terrain, where water does not easily seep in, even a small amount of rainfall can easily cause flooding.
According to NBC, the sudden heavy rain flooded roads in many places, and many street trees were toppled by strong winds. A passenger trapped inside a submerged underpass was barely rescued with the help of rescue workers.

Additionally, thunder and lightning caused power outages in the area, affecting about 7,600 citizens. The Las Vegas Fire Department reported receiving around 300 emergency calls related to the heavy rain, including vehicle collision accidents.
Even casinos, famous for their extravagant facilities, could not withstand the heavy rain, resulting in roof collapses. Consequently, rainwater leaked into the buildings, soaking slot machines and carpets inside the gaming halls. Indoor large electronic billboards at casino hotels were also captured spewing water like fountains.
Experts pointed out that this is due to rising temperatures caused by global warming, which increases water vapor generation. As the atmosphere holds more moisture, it results in more frequent rainfall.
