[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Amid the escalating energy crisis in Europe, where abnormal climate phenomena such as heatwaves have become frequent, the Spanish government has urged office workers not to wear neckties.
According to major foreign media, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said at a press conference on the 29th (local time) that cabinet ministers, public officials, and the private sector should stop wearing neckties to save energy. Sanchez, who appeared at the conference without a necktie on his suit, emphasized, "This means that we can all save energy."
Not wearing a necktie can reduce air conditioner usage and potentially lead to lower energy prices. Sanchez also announced plans to implement emergency measures for energy saving, such as requiring stores with air conditioning to keep their doors closed starting from the 1st of next month.
This is part of a 210 billion euro (approximately 279 trillion won) policy package recently promoted by the European Union (EU) Commission to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce dependence on Russian energy.
Europe is facing intensified energy instability as record heatwaves coincide with soaring energy prices caused by Russia's reduction in natural gas supply, leading to growing calls for energy conservation.
