Let's Play on Summer Vacation Weekends! With Math and Family!
[Seoul District News] Nowon Math Culture Center to Run Summer Vacation Programs from August 20-21: 'Math Code Letter Writing,' 'Family Board Game Arcade,' 'Try Color Logic,' and 'Detective Try'... Dongdaemun District University Student Administrative Experience Participants Tour Key Facilities and Attractions... Seocho District to Operate 4 Heat Relief Centers Until August 26
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) is operating a summer vacation special program called "Math, Let's Play!" for upper elementary students and families at the Nowon Math Culture Center.
This special program consists of four sections: 'Writing Math Cipher Letters,' 'Family Board Game Arcade,' 'Try Color Logic,' and 'Detective Try.'
First, 'Writing Math Cipher Letters' is targeted at 4th-grade elementary students, where they learn about the meaning of ciphers and various types of ciphers. Participants will also have a session writing secret letters to friends and family using the Scytale cipher (a cipher first appearing in history around 500 BC in the Sparta region, used to send secret messages during war). It will be held on August 20th from 11:00 AM for 60 minutes, with 16 participants.
The 'Family Board Game Arcade' is also held for families. Families learn math-related board games and engage in competitions with other participating families to promote family harmony. It will be held on August 20th from 2:00 PM for 150 minutes, recruiting four teams of up to four family members including elementary students.
On the 21st, the 'Try Color Logic' and 'Detective Try' programs will be conducted.
'Try Color Logic' is for 5th-grade elementary students. It is a class where participants solve color logic puzzles that improve concentration, logical thinking, and reasoning skills, and draw anamorphosis (distorted images that appear correct only when viewed from a specific angle or reflected in a curved mirror). Especially, Color Logic involves coloring based on numbers and colors written horizontally and vertically according to logic rules, with the fun of finding cute math symbol friends hidden in the Nowon Math Culture Center. It will be held from 2:00 PM for 70 minutes, with 12 participants.
Lastly, 'Detective Try' is for 6th-grade elementary students. It is a detective game where participants find the culprit through hidden clues using mathematical principles, naturally engaging with math while playing the detective role. It will be held from 11:00 AM for 70 minutes, with 12 participants.
All programs are free, and applications open on August 2nd, Tuesday, at 10:00 AM on a first-come, first-served basis via the Nowon Math Culture Center website.
The Nowon Math Culture Center, established in October 2019 as the first math-themed experiential learning center among local governments nationwide, operates various exhibits and educational content to make math easy and fun. In particular, 'Math, Let's Play!' started as a summer vacation special program last year and is now in its third iteration. A survey of 48 participants in the winter vacation program this February showed a 91.7% satisfaction rate, receiving great response.
Additionally, the Nowon Math Culture Center challenges the stereotype that math is difficult by adding music to math exhibitions for 30 minutes every last Sunday of the month at 2:00 PM. This is the 'Math + Music = Healing' program. On the 31st, visitors can enjoy free performances of violin, guitar, flute, and more in the first-floor lobby.
District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “I hope children on vacation can become familiar with math and strengthen family bonds through engaging classes and family-oriented play,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to plan and operate various programs that stimulate mathematical curiosity and allow family participation as popular math programs.”
"Besides work experience, it was refreshing to tour major facilities within Dongdaemun-gu."
A university student participating in the administrative experience training shared their impressions after touring major local facilities and landmarks.
Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) conducted tours of major local facilities and landmarks from the 19th to the 21st to instill pride in the community and increase interest and understanding of district administration among participants of the '2022 Summer Vacation University Student Administrative Training.'
The '2022 Summer Vacation University Student Administrative Training' selects about 100 university students to experience various administrative tasks at the district office, neighborhood community centers, Dongdaemun-gu Facilities Management Corporation, and more throughout July.
From the 19th to the 21st, the district conducted tours of major facilities and landmarks for the 100 participants of the training program.
The main tour courses included ▲ the 6.25 Martyrs 16 Branch Memorial Monument (294-3 Dapsimni-dong) ▲ Jangan Rainwater Pump Station (115 Garam-gil, Seongdong-gu) ▲ Dongdaemun Disabled Welfare Center (521 Cheonggyecheon-ro) ▲ Seonnongdan (38 Muhak-ro 44-gil) ▲ Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center (Korean Medicine Museum) (26 Yakryeong Jungang-ro) ▲ traditional markets (such as Gyeongdong Market) (3 Gosan Jaro 36-gil).
Visiting the '6.25 Martyrs 16 Branch Memorial Monument' located in Jangryeongdang Park, Dapsimni (photo), university students reflected on the dedication of 16 individuals who risked their lives to protect the country and neighbors during the Korean War. Afterwards, they explored local administrative facilities and cultural assets to deepen their understanding of the community and administrative system.
Kim Jin-man, Director of the Autonomous Administration Division, said, “I hope university students not only enhance their understanding of district administration and public service through the administrative training but also develop interest and pride in Dongdaemun-gu by touring major local facilities and landmarks. We will continue to do our best to prepare various policies for youth.”
Seocho-gu (District Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced that it will operate four outdoor heat relief shelters utilizing natural forest shade until August 26th to help residents stay cool during the heatwave.
The outdoor heat relief shelter locations are ▲ near Banpo Neighborhood Park (around 55 Sapyeong-daero) ▲ near the foot volleyball court at Yangjaecheon Neighborhood Park (around 447 Yangjaecheon-dong Bicycle Path) ▲ along the Gilmajung-gil walking trail (around 32 Seocho-daero 70-gil) ▲ Shindong Neighborhood Park (58-14 Jamwon-dong), providing urban rest areas using natural shade.
Among these, the Banpo Neighborhood Park outdoor heat relief shelter opened for the first time this year and is equipped with comfortable chairs, rocking chairs, platforms, ring toss games, and a photo zone with teddy bears, creating an atmosphere that feels like a retreat in a forested area.
Additionally, all four shelters operate a 'Seorikul Refrigerator' that supplies an average of 350 bottles of 500ml cool water daily for free, and also provide ice packs and Seoripul parasol rental services to help beat the heat.
To prevent COVID-19, hand sanitizers are provided, and district safety job workers are designated as shelter managers to regularly disinfect the facilities.
The operating hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
