[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] LG Chem is targeting the sustainable materials market with eco-friendly certified products made from bio-based raw materials.

On the 21st, LG Chem announced that it will export phenol and acetone made from bio-based raw materials for the first time. These products are produced using bio-based raw materials such as waste cooking oil and have obtained the global sustainable material certification (ISCC PLUS).

The export volume amounts to a total of 5,200 tons, including 4,000 tons of phenol and 1,200 tons of acetone, and is scheduled to be supplied to customers in July and August. This is the largest volume of ISCC PLUS certified products ever exported from Korea.

Phenol is an initial raw material for polycarbonate, a high-performance plastic used in automotive parts. Phenol-based resins are also partially used as raw materials for construction materials such as electrical and electronic components and insulation materials.

Acetone has excellent solubility and is mainly used in the production of solvents such as cleaners and paint thinners. It is widely used across industries as a raw material for construction materials like artificial marble.

The bio-based phenol and acetone produced at LG Chem’s Daesan plant will be supplied to the Chinese and Thai factories of a German chemical materials specialist company and used in the production of high-performance plastics such as polycarbonate.

Since starting the first export of bio-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) in August last year, LG Chem has launched a total of 41 ISCC PLUS certified products including polyolefin (PO) and high value-added synthetic resin (ABS), accelerating its market development.

No Guk-rae, head of LG Chem’s Petrochemical Business Division, said, "We will lead the sustainable materials market with eco-friendly certified products tailored to customer needs."
