This event was promoted to commemorate the official name change of Pohang Airport, which was formally enacted on July 14 following the decision of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Aviation Policy Committee on February 9, based on the joint request for airport name change by the local governments of Pohang and Gyeongju.
The ceremony was attended by about 50 officials including Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province; Park Yong-seon, Vice Chairman of Gyeongbuk Provincial Council; Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang; Baek In-gyu, Chairman of Pohang City Council; Joo Nak-young, Mayor of Gyeongju; Lee Cheol-woo, Chairman of Gyeongju City Council; National Assembly members Kim Seok-ki, Kim Jeong-jae, and Kim Byung-wook; Lee Mi-ae, Vice President of Korea Airports Corporation; Park Byung-ryul, CEO of Jin Air; and city and provincial council members, celebrating the official enactment of the Pohang Gyeongju Airport name.
On this day, local governments and heads of related organizations agreed to strengthen the cooperative system so that the name change of Pohang Gyeongju Airport can become a symbolic and successful case of regional cooperation and development.
Following the airport name change, Pohang City and Gyeongju City will carry out related projects such as sharing airline financial support (with Gyeongju bearing 10% annually), launching a direct bus between Pohang Gyeongju Airport and Gyeongju Bomun (Gyeongju bus number 1000), and increasing flights on the Pohang-Gimpo route. In addition, they plan to attract tourists to the region by linking tourism promotion fund budgets of Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City, and Gyeongju City to conduct promotions such as influencer fam tours and discounted airfares for general tourists.
