Suncheon Fire Station Urges Caution Over Theft of Indoor Fire Hydrant Nozzles
[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon Fire Station (Chief Park Sang-jin) has urged caution regarding the theft of indoor fire hydrant nozzles (gwanchang) in apartment buildings.
Indoor fire hydrants are very important firefighting facilities used by apartment residents for initial fire suppression in the event of a fire.
The gwanchang, a component of the indoor fire hydrant, is made of brass, which is traded at scrap yards. Recently, due to the rise in scrap metal prices, thefts of gwanchang have been occurring frequently.
Last month, about 500 gwanchang disappeared from eight apartment complexes in Gwangju, with about half found at scrap yards. Recently, 20 gwanchang were stolen at once from an apartment in Gwangyang housing about 90 households.
Accordingly, the fire station is providing guidance to prevent similar damage, including checking for theft or loss of indoor fire hydrant gwanchang and strengthening security patrol activities in apartments.

Apartment management offices and fire safety managers in the jurisdiction are urged to pay special attention to maintaining firefighting facilities such as indoor fire hydrant boxes and preventing theft or loss of firefighting equipment for the safety of residents.”
