Chungnam Special Crackdown on Illegal Activities in Forests During Summer Vacation Season
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province announced on the 13th that it will conduct special crackdowns to eradicate illegal activities in forests during the summer vacation period from July to August.
The crackdown will be carried out jointly by the province and 15 cities and counties, focusing on famous local mountains and mountain valleys.
The main targets of the crackdown are illegal occupation and commercial activities in mountain valleys, camping and cooking outside permitted areas in forests, illegal digging and harvesting of forest products, and dumping of household waste and filth.
Those who dump filth or garbage in forests may be fined up to 1 million KRW, and those who dig or harvest forest products such as trees and wild vegetables without permission may face imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to 50 million KRW, so visitors are urged to be cautious.
The province plans to take strict measures against detected illegal activities in order to improve public awareness and maintain social order.

Lee Sang-chun, head of the Forest Resources Division of the province, said, “Since COVID-19, public interest in forest recreation and forest healing has increased, leading to a rapid rise in tourists visiting forests. The province will do its best to protect our precious forests.”
