Sacheon-si Conducts Aerial Pest Control on Rice Using Drones and Unmanned Helicopters
Promotion of Joint Rice Pest and Disease Control Project Until the End of August
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sacheon City, Gyeongnam Province, is promoting a joint pest control project for rice crops until the end of August to minimize damage to rice farmers.
This joint pest control is being carried out due to the annual increase in rice pests caused by global warming and abnormal high temperatures. Starting from Sacheon-eup on the 13th, the joint pest control will be conducted twice.
The first control period is from the 13th to the 29th, and the second control period is from August 15th to 29th. Drones, unmanned helicopters, and wide-area sprayers will be used to control pests over an area of 3,406 hectares.
The city expects this to contribute to the production of high-quality rice by not only solving the difficulties of individual pesticide spraying by farmers but also preventing and controlling pests that affect rice quality and yield.
The main targets for pest control are rice blast, bacterial leaf blight, sheath blight, bacterial grain rot, planthoppers, moths, stink bugs, and other pests that frequently occur during the rice heading stage.

A city official said, “During the aerial pest control period, please pay attention to managing beehives for beekeepers, closing ventilation windows in vinyl greenhouses, and managing laundry and drying food on rooftops. Also, please inspect areas adjacent to livestock farms, other crop fields, and mushroom cultivation houses again before pest control to prevent damage caused by aerial spraying.” He added, “Since pests may still occur after the joint rice pest control, continuous interest and self-monitoring are necessary.”
