Yeosu Coast Guard Breaks a Sweat in Rescue Operations Amid Consecutive Weekend Accidents
Fishing Boats, Motorboats, and Other Leisure Activity Vessel Accidents Occur One After Another
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] The Yeosu Maritime Police Station in Jeollanam-do announced on the 11th that "as the number of maritime leisure activity participants increases, weekend leisure activity vessel incidents and accidents have occurred one after another, and we are sweating hard in emergency rescue efforts."
According to Yeosu Maritime Police, at around 8:05 a.m. on the 9th, a report was received from a nearby vessel that fishing boat A (9.77 tons, 22 crew members) had run aground about 190 meters north of Palyong Bridge in Goheung-gun.
Upon receiving the report, Yeosu Maritime Police dispatched patrol vessels and rescue teams and requested assistance from nearby private rescue boats. Twenty passengers were safely rescued and moved to a secure location. Although fishing boat A was grounded on a reef, no hull breach was found, and after safety measures were taken by the maritime police rescue team, the boat was able to be freed from the reef by a nearby fishing boat during high tide.
Additionally, at 2:31 a.m. on the 9th, a report was received about a motorboat (2 crew members) about 190 meters east of Sorok Bridge in Goheung-gun that would not start. Upon dispatch and inspection, it was confirmed that the engine would not start due to lack of fuel, and the boat was safely moved to the harbor.
Later, at 5:51 a.m., a report was received that a motorboat (3 crew members) about 550 meters southeast of Songdo, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu-si suddenly would not start. Emergency measures were taken using a portable battery charger from the Dolsan coastal rescue boat, and the engine started without issue, allowing the boat to return to port.
A Yeosu Maritime Police official stated, "As weekend leisure activity participants increase, maritime safety accidents are also rising. We urge people to conduct pre-departure inspections of leisure vessels and to identify geographical risk factors in advance."
