Suwon City to Exhibit 'Sister City Specialty Plants' at Suwon Arboretum Opening Next Year
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting a project to receive representative plants from domestic and international sister and friendship cities and exhibit them in the 'Suwon Arboretum,' which will open next year.
On the 11th, Suwon City announced that since May, through the Suwon City Park and Greenery Project Office, it has explained the purpose of the exhibition to 18 international sister and friendship cities and 6 domestic sister cities and requested them to donate distinctive plants representing their cities.
The main donated plants include ▲ distinctive seeds or living specimens representing the respective cities ▲ plants related to the main themed gardens of the Suwon Arboretum ▲ books, specimens, detailed illustrations, and research materials.
The city plans to display the donated plants in appropriate locations within the arboretum and install information boards around the plants to guide visitors about the related cities.
Currently, Suwon City's international sister and friendship cities include Townsville (Australia), Yalova (Turkey), Toluca (Mexico), Fez (Morocco), Freiburg (Germany), Phoenix (USA), among 18 locations. Domestic sister and friendship cities include Jeju, Pohang, Jeonju, Nonsan, Geoje City, and Taean County.
A city official said, "By exhibiting representative plants from Suwon City's domestic and international sister cities at the Suwon Arboretum, we will provide a special attraction for citizens visiting the arboretum," adding, "The establishment of the Suwon Arboretum will strengthen friendship with sister cities and serve as an opportunity to activate exchanges related to the environment and nature."
The city is constructing the 'Suwon Ilwol Arboretum' (tentative name) in the Cheoncheon-dong area of Jangan-gu in West Suwon, and the 'Suwon Yeongheung Arboretum' (tentative name) in the Woncheon-dong area of Yeongtong-gu in East Suwon.
Construction of both arboretums began in the second half of 2020 and is progressing smoothly.
