13 Years of Big Data Power... SKT Unveils Data Platform 'GeoVision Puzzle'
Provided to Public Institutions and Companies in API Format
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] SK Telecom unveiled its data platform 'GeoVision Puzzle' on the 5th, which provides various statistics related to human movement, residence, and stay based on telecommunications data.
This platform was created based on 13 years of accumulated big data and analytical know-how through SK Telecom's big data analysis service 'GeoVision.' GeoVision Puzzle offers two types of services: 'Map View' and 'Data Catalog.'
The Map View displays real-time congestion levels on a map in a grid format. If the real-time floating population within a 50m by 50m square is 500 or more, it is shown in purple; 250 to 499 in orange; and 0 to 49 in white. This also includes statistical data related to congestion at specific buildings or locations such as department stores, subway (each train car), shopping centers, and theme parks.
The Data Catalog provides analyzed information by collecting and processing SK Telecom's base station and Wi-Fi data and combining it with public data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Statistics Korea. Examples include floating population data of specific areas like 'commercial districts regaining vitality post-COVID' or data such as 'apartments with the highest proportion of residents commuting to Gangnam Station, Yeouido Station, or Gwanghwamun Station.'
SK Telecom announced plans to provide this data to public institutions and companies in the form of application programming interfaces (APIs). Using API data, which is a 'mid-product' similar to meal kits that complete a meal with a simple cooking process, allows for easy planning and development of technologies and services.
SK Telecom plans to select 'excellent utilization cases' of the data and disclose them on the GeoVision Puzzle homepage. Additionally, as part of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, it will collaborate with ventures and startups aiming to develop technologies and services based on data. In the future, the company plans to diversify the types of data so that the general public can also obtain useful information based on big data.
