Kwon Seong-dong on Opposition's Demand for Emergency National Assembly: "Starting a Snap Session"
Democratic Party Likely to Hold Plenary Session to Unilaterally Push Forward Organization
"Unacceptable Conditions for Withdrawal of Special Committee on Criminal Procedure and Constitutional Court Filings"
"Repetition of Arrogance Will Return as Repetition of Judgment"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, strongly criticized the Democratic Party of Korea's attempt to convene a July extraordinary session of the National Assembly, saying it "has initiated a rushed opening of the session."
Through Facebook on the same day, Floor Leader Kwon stated, "Yesterday, a request to convene the July extraordinary session of the National Assembly was submitted under the names of all Democratic Party members. This is effectively a declaration of a unilateral opening of the session." He criticized, "The final episode of the Democratic Party's political drama, where they do whatever they want, ended with 'I will open the session alone.'"
The Democratic Party submitted the request to convene the extraordinary session the day before, planning to elect a new Speaker of the National Assembly and proceed with the unilateral organization of the committees. According to National Assembly regulations, the extraordinary session will begin on the first day of the third day after the submission of the request, which is next month on the 1st, allowing for a plenary session to be held.
Floor Leader Kwon said, "The Democratic Party had no intention of negotiating from the start. The People Power Party had already agreed last July to take charge of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. However, the Democratic Party played it up in the media as a 'concession.'" He added, "The conditions proposed by the Democratic Party, such as participation in the Special Committee on Judicial Reform and withdrawal of the constitutional complaint on the 'complete withdrawal of prosecution's investigative powers' (Geomsuwanbak), are also absolutely unacceptable." He sharpened his criticism, saying, "The Democratic Party pushed through the Geomsuwanbak legislation alone, but now they want to share the cleanup with both ruling and opposition parties to get a free pass."
