[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] POSCO Pohang Steelworks held a 'Yeonwa Jeongchosik' ceremony, engraving words on refractory bricks to pray for the successful construction and stable operation of the new coke plant on the 17th.
The event was attended by POSCO executives and employees, including Lee Joo-tae, Head of the Purchasing and Investment Division, and Lee Baek-hee, Director of Pohang Steelworks, as well as executives and employees from affiliated companies.
Participants inscribed 14 inscriptions such as "Gieop Simin (Corporate Citizen)," "Jangsu (Longevity)," "Yeongsok (Sustainability)," and "Anjeon (Safety)" on the refractory bricks prepared inside the venue, expressing their wishes for the successful construction of the new coke plant and safety during the construction process.
The current project, which began on July 1 last year, is the first step in modernizing POSCO's coke plants. Starting with this project, POSCO plans to sequentially modernize all four coke plants currently in operation.
The newly established plant, with an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons, will feature large coke oven equipment with a height of 7.6 meters, improving production efficiency and quality, and will significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions through a three-stage combustion structure.
Additionally, by applying the Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ) system, waste heat generated during the coke cooling process will be used to generate electricity, greatly contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
POSCO plans to place about 80% of the total investment orders with domestic companies to foster the domestic industry and expects to contribute significantly to the local economy by deploying a total workforce of approximately 706,000 people during the construction period.
