Pohang City Leaps Forward as a Leading Environmental Education City to Achieve '2050 Carbon Neutrality'!
Si-Do Pohang Office of Education Signs Business Agreement to Promote Environmental Education
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Pohang City and the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education Pohang Support Office signed a business agreement at City Hall on the 20th to revitalize environmental education in Pohang.
This business agreement was promoted for the city and the education support office to lead changes in schools and life transitions toward carbon neutrality in the era of the climate crisis. Through this, it plans to take the lead in creating an environmental education leading city centered on the Pohang Environmental School, an environmental education facility established on the site of a closed school in Singwang-myeon (former Singwang Elementary School).
The agreement promised to faithfully perform the roles of each institution and cooperate with each other, along with expanding and supporting customized environmental education to revitalize environmental education. The main contents include ▲direct education using ecological environment spaces and renewable energy facilities ▲distribution of cross-curricular environmental education programs based on various environmental themes ▲education to strengthen teacher capabilities ▲external cooperation to spread ecological environmental culture ▲mutual cooperation for school changes and life transitions toward carbon neutrality.
The Pohang Environmental School guarantees citizens' right to learn and supports comprehensive environmental education for sustainable living. It provides consulting and network building in related fields such as carbon-neutral schools, ecological transition schools, and climate change education, and plays a role in developing and distributing high-quality integrated environmental education programs.
The Environmental School has continuously developed environmental education programs suited to regional characteristics, consistently producing excellent programs designated by the Ministry of Environment such as Green Consumption Green Table and Complete Conquest of Fine Dust. Even during the COVID-19 situation, it did not stop environmental education for citizens and continuously conducted various non-face-to-face environmental education systems through SNS.
Also, since it is a facility created based on the site of a closed school, it is expected to establish itself as an effective utilization model as an educational, cultural, and resting space for students and citizens.
Mayor Kangdeok Lee said, “To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we will establish the ‘Pohang Environmental School’ as a regional environmental education center and provide generous support for revitalizing environmental education through continuous cooperation with the Pohang Office of Education.” He added, “We will operate upgraded environmental education programs such as carbon-neutral practice model schools to make Pohang a leading city in environmental education.”
Director Haeja Park of the Environmental School said, “We will do our best to make the Environmental School the unique environmental education facility in the region,” and added, “Through the school, we will strive to lead life changes where all citizens actively participate in the culture of practicing carbon neutrality as environmental citizens.”
