[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee announced on the 20th that it visited the joint crackdown site on illegal motorcycle activities (Bukaksan Palgakjeong, Jongno-gu) conducted jointly by Jongno Police Station, Jongno District Office, and Korea Transportation Safety Authority on the 14th for an on-site inspection.
Bukaksan Palgakjeong is a rest area located near the famous tourist road ‘Bukak Skyway,’ known for its scenic views, making it a popular spot for motorcycle riders. The joint crackdown focused on illegal acts under the Road Traffic Act and the Motor Vehicle Management Act targeting motorcycles, including △illegal modifications of exhaust, lighting, and steering devices △reckless and racing driving △removal or damage of license plates △drunk driving.
This visit was made with the purpose of eradicating illegal motorcycle modifications that cause inconvenience to citizens due to loud noise and excessive lighting during late hours in summer, and to proactively block dangerous driving behaviors as the number of motorcycle fatal accidents increased compared to the same period last year, which could potentially lead to serious accidents. According to data from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, there were 20 fatal accidents involving motorcycles as perpetrators in Seoul by the end of May this year, an increase of 8 cases (66.7%) compared to 12 cases during the same period last year.
The number of joint crackdowns on illegal motorcycle activities recorded until May this year was 371 cases. Detailed crackdown contents include △violations of muffler and headlight standards (206 cases) △unauthorized installation of fog lights (82 cases) △license plate sealing (5 cases) △installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting devices (5 cases) △others (73 cases).
