Musicow Takes Collaborative Steps to Revitalize the Music IP Ecosystem
Operation of 'Salon Date,' a Meeting Place for Artists and Fans
Revitalizing the Music Market through Collaboration with the 'Two-Track Project'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] As social interest in intellectual property rights (IP) grows, Musicow, a platform for claiming participation rights in music royalties, is joining efforts to revitalize the industry through collaborations with various music programs and artists.
On the 17th, Musicow announced that it will work to spread public awareness of copyrights and promote the culture of recognizing music as a cultural financial product and sharing profits.
Musicow, which began its beta service in 2017 and officially launched in 2018, currently has about 230 artists and approximately 1.1 million members.
Recently, Musicow participated in the production of the TVING original program "Alive." The TVING original "Alive" recreated performances by the late artist Yoo Jaeha and the late Lim Yuntaek of Ulala Session using AI restoration technology, presenting classic songs in a new light and gaining attention. Together with the production company Cactus Media, Musicow plans to share the neighboring rights participation claims of some of the reconstructed classic songs from "Alive" with fans.
Additionally, Musicow is promoting a new music project with fans called the "Two-Track Project." The Two-Track Project is produced by Jo Donghee, the original folk singer-songwriter and lyricist in Korea, and composer Jo Dongik. This project presents songs in separate male and female singer versions, and the released tracks will be shared with fans in the form of neighboring rights participation claims through Musicow. In April, the first track of the Two-Track Project, "Chronicle (年代記)," featuring singers Jung Seunghwan and Jang Pilsoon, along with the tracks "Until We Learn to Love Love" by Jannabi and Han Youngae, received positive responses.
Musicow emphasized that beyond a business model that returns part of platform profits to creators, it has opened a space for exchange to revitalize the music ecosystem since the early days of its service. Starting with a "Music Listening Session" (now "Salon Date") with singer-songwriter Radi in October 2017, Musicow has operated music talk events called "Salon Date" at its own complex cultural space "Salon de Musicow," where artists and the public come together to raise awareness about copyrights and copyright holders and build a new playground for creators.
"Salon Date" is an offline cultural event where fans who share lyricists', composers', and copyright revenue rights communicate. It is conducted in the form of a mini-concert where artists explain their creative activities. So far, many composers and producers have participated, including singers Radi, Park Hyekyung, izi, as well as Lee Kyungseop, Lee Seungjoo, Park Jungwook, Idan Yopchagi, Shinsadong Tiger, Michin Gamseong, Michin Sonkak & Sean Kim.
