[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province has taken on the role of a guide to help promising small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the province that wish to export to Japan enter the Japanese market.

This move follows the achievements of the '2022 Gyeonggi Province RCEP Utilization FTA Market Development Team' last month, which secured export consultations and contracts with Japan, raising expectations as a starting point for export companies to gain a competitive edge.

The 'Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)' is a multilateral agreement involving 16 countries, including the 10 ASEAN nations, South Korea, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and India.

Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi FTA Utilization Support Center (hereafter Gyeonggi FTA Center) announced on the 16th that they will conduct a "'2022 Japan Regional Specialized Training for Utilizing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP)' for export SMEs in the province."

The training covers ▲Understanding the Japanese market ▲Strategies and marketing methods for entering the Japanese market ▲Import-export customs clearance and export regulation systems in Japan ▲Strategies for utilizing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

In particular, by learning marketing strategies for entering the Japanese market using major Japanese online platforms such as Rakuten and Amazon, participants will have the opportunity to secure a price competitiveness advantage.

With the enforcement of 'RCEP' marking the first free trade agreement between Korea and Japan, the training focuses on resolving difficulties faced by export companies and enhancing their ability to utilize the agreement for smooth market penetration in Japan.

The training will be held online in four sessions from June 21 to 30 (every Tuesday and Thursday).

Prior to the Japan regional training course, the province has been supporting customized regional training and consulting related to 'RCEP' since February.

Additionally, last month, SMEs in the province utilized 'RCEP' to conduct a total of 64 export consultations worth 4.3 million USD (approximately 5.3 billion KRW) with Japanese buyers and secured contracts worth 760,000 USD (approximately 900 million KRW).

So far, a total of 120 companies have participated in regional training for Central America’s five countries, Vietnam, Europe, and China, gaining comprehensive market analysis, entry strategies, and customs procedures, providing opportunities to build related capabilities for market entry.

The province plans to operate 'RCEP' utilization training courses sequentially for India, the United States, and Indonesia in the second half of this year.

Kim Tae-hyun, Director of the Foreign Trade Division, said, "As concerns among export companies grow due to prolonged cost increases and supply chain shortages, it is a time when accurate understanding and strategic approaches to export markets are necessary," adding, "We will support the rapid provision of relevant regional information to quickly respond to the rapidly changing export market."
