Kim Dong-yeon Meets Lee Jae-myung, "Please Coach Me"... Lee: "You Will Do Better Than Me"
Ruling Party Official Includes Governor Transition Committee, Lee Responds "Well Done"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] On the afternoon of the 8th, Kim Dong-yeon, the governor-elect of Gyeonggi Province, met with Lee Jae-myung, the senior advisor of the Democratic Party of Korea, at the National Assembly Members' Office Building. The two met for the first time since the June 1 local elections and had a conversation for about an hour.
Governor-elect Kim said to Advisor Lee, "Since you are the former governor, I came to receive your guidance and hear your good advice," adding, "Please give me some good advice and coach me." In response, Advisor Lee said, "You will do much better than I did."
When Governor-elect Kim explained his plan to include members from the People Power Party in the governor's transition committee, Advisor Lee said, "You did well. Provincial administration needs to be conducted in an integrated manner."
After the meeting, Governor-elect Kim explained that they also discussed the results of the local elections. He said, "It was a close race, but there was an opinion that the residents of Gyeonggi Province sent a stern warning message to the Democratic Party, and at the same time, it reflected the expectation that the Democratic Party would provide sound criticism for checks and balances. While the idea of electing capable people was at play, the 'close' result also carried the meaning of warning, reproach, and expectation toward the Democratic Party," he said during the conversation with Advisor Lee.
Regarding the Democratic Party's reform, Governor-elect Kim said, "The main reason for losing the presidential election and struggling in the local elections was the party's lack of reflection and introspection, and hesitation to pursue reforms and changes that meet the public's expectations. Although I am a newcomer member of the Democratic Party, I will contribute as the co-chair of the Democratic Party Political Change Promotion Committee."
When asked about being mentioned as a potential presidential candidate, Governor-elect Kim replied, "I have no interest in the presidential issue at all right now," adding, "As the governor-elect, I will work hard with the residents in mind."
