[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] Yoon Deok-min, the former head of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy (KNDA) and the first appointed ambassador to Japan under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, is regarded as an expert well-versed in international politics.
He served as a professor for over 20 years at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, the predecessor of the KNDA, and held positions such as head of the Security and Unification Research Department. During the Park Geun-hye administration from 2013 to 2017, he served as the director of the KNDA, a vice-ministerial level post.
In 2008, under the Lee Myung-bak administration, he was appointed as a member of the Future Diplomacy and Security Subcommittee of the Presidential Commission on Future Planning.
During President Yoon Suk-yeol’s presidential campaign, he participated in the policy advisory group, a think tank-like body, helping to gather foreign affairs and security experts from the early stages and contributing to the formulation of campaign pledges.
From April 24 to 28, during the transition period, he visited Japan as part of the policy consultation delegation on Korea-Japan relations representing the then president-elect, engaging in discussions aimed at restoring bilateral relations.
Although he comes from an academic background, he has experience in public office as the director of the KNDA and is known to have a strong network within Japanese political and academic circles.
